I can't believe it - I just found out someone that had installed the
BMW navagation in their E36 (3-series) car. I had wanted to do this myself when
I bought the car.

My birthday - but what the hell - went to Sears with the list from the
E36 to see if we could figure out the parts and part number equivelants. Talked to
a guy named Bill that said he would call me the next day with his findings.

Got accespted to the BMW Navagation Yahoo Group. They had a part list
with the parts that were needed for a E39 (5-series) car. Read some interesting articles
and looked at some cool pictures of other peoples installationss. I then went to
MotorwerksBMW to order parts ended up with a 15% discount - just for asking.

Went back to dealership to ask about the difference in price for
the two different options that I have. 1. PacificBMW.com and 2. MotorwerksBMW.com
They are about 300 dollars differing in price.

Called the dealership to see if my parts were in. Horay! They
were. Only to find out that four of the items were on back order. Dang. He
said that they were being shipped from Germany and would be here the following
thursday. Two weeks for the parts I suppose that's not so bad. I was so excited
that I went to the dealership and picked up the parts that he did have. This was
good because it gives me a chance to see that we have everything. Do we? No.
I forgot to order a trim piece. Order that and some attachment hardware. Should
be in next week around the same time as the parts from Germany.

Okay so tired I can barely stand - going to hit the sac for a couple of hours and then
finish the wiring harness. Everything is installed, but doesn't seem to work. Only displays
when I press the 'steering wheel' button, but then for only about 4 seconds. I've worked on
my car for about 11 hours right now

Can you say crazy? I finished the installation - soldering the wires and all. Only to find that
it's not working correctly right now. I think that I either hosed up the software installation or
... something. To tired yesterday to figure it out - to tired today to care. I'll work on it on
monday night. That sounds good - off to watch some boob tube.

After about a hour of debugging with the multimeter I figured out that I didn't have the new wiring
harness plugged into the power connector. Must have been a tired oversight. Upgraded from v17
to v20 and everything works. Man is it sweet. Came up with this in my delirium:
48 parts - $3383.99,
4 days, 3 nights in the 70 degree parking garage,
having a navigation unit in your BMW - priceless.
